The Shells
MEET Donax variabilis
I was walking on Coronado beach in California, and there were thousands of Coquina Clams. They were so colorful, I thought I had to do something with them. So, I decided to make my special birthday cake out of them. | 2018.02.15.
THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF A BEAUTIFUL ADVENTURE
Collecting shells and the associated meditation process is a unique way to connect with nature and my inner world. The fact that I also incorporated shell collecting into my physical exercise routine by doing squats while running is a beautiful example of how mental and physical health can be combined in an inspiring hobby. The creative process, as I increasingly focus on patterns and the harmony of surfaces, is also an exciting development.
DISCOVER THE ART OF NATURE
🦋 This is when the idea came to me: it was time to take it to the next level, set a goal, and consciously search for the perfect shells that would fit into place. The idea of designing a life-sized yoga figure is a great challenge. It is a special experience to combine the beauty of nature with my personal goals in a piece of art.
🦋 Non-stop brainstorming and countless hours of work—this can’t be measured in time. The concept of time fades away, leaving only patience as the unit of measurement to gauge progress.
🦋 It takes years to collect the perfect shells in the right colors, shapes, and sizes. The arrival of shells is seasonal—some years, there aren’t any, while other years, the shores are full. It all depends on what nature offers in a given year.
🦋 You have to wait for the shells to grow and die naturally. But if a big storm comes and washes them away before they can be collected, the project can be set back completely.
🦋 If there are enough shells and the ocean is calm, you then have to monitor the tides to know when they’re accessible. Sometimes, low tide happens only in complete darkness, making it impossible to see their colors. It’s a true treasure hunt that requires patience until enough are gathered to create something.
🦋 Since the surface isn’t flat and the design isn’t symmetrical, each shell has to be placed individually. You can’t plan or calculate it in advance, so the process involves constant brainstorming during creation.
APPRECIATE OUR WONDERFUL world
In California, I first lived in cosmopolitan Los Angeles, then moved to the vibrant city of San Diego, and finally settled in the family-friendly La Jolla. It was here that I found the tranquility to truly immerse myself in my new endeavors and lifestyle. I entered a new universe where I began designing planets: birth, flourishing, fulfillment, and the journey into serenity were the themes that captivated me—the very order of life itself.
FOCUS ON THE LIFE-GIVING AND NURTURING ASPECTS
“Empty your mind of all thoughts. Let your heart be at peace. Watch the turmoil of beings, but contemplate their return. Each separate being in the universe returns to the common source. Returning to the source is serenity…
…If you don’t realize the source, you stumble in confusion and sorrow. When you realize where you come from, you naturally become tolerant, disinterested, amused, kindhearted as a grandmother, dignified as a king. Immersed in the wonder of the Tao, you can deal with whatever life brings you, and when death comes, you are ready.” Tao Te Ching Written by Lao Tzu from a translation by S. Mitchell
